Philosophy of Education

Seven Characteristics of a Biblical Philosophy of Education

  1. God and His purposes are the starting point of education. (“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Proverbs 1:7)
  2. Scripture tells the truth about God, His Son, and His purposes. (“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17)
  3. Creation is fundamental to a biblical philosophy of education. (“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1)
  4. Man is created in the image of God, but man has fallen through sin and God’s image has been marred. (“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of the fruit and ate. She also gave to hr husband with her, and he ate.” Genesis 3:6)
  5. God has allowed man to discover the secrets of His creation, and He expects us to be good stewards of what we learn. (“The secret of the Lord is with those that fear Him…” Psalm 25:14)
  6. Education is not an end in itself, but a means to an end to fulfill the purposes of God. (“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ…” Philippians 3:7)
  7. The ultimate goal of education is to bring glory to God. (“For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:36)
